What does it take to lead a company with thousands of employees, millions of customers, and decisions worth crores of rupees? The answer is more than business knowledge. A CEO is responsible for setting the company’s direction, managing growth, making critical decisions, and creating long-term value.

Naturally, this level of responsibility is reflected in executive compensation. However, CEO salary in India can vary significantly depending on the size of the organization, industry, experience, business performance, and the structure of the compensation package.

According to Deloitte’s 2026 India Executive Performance and Rewards Survey, the median compensation for non-promoter or professional CEOs reached ₹10.5 crore in FY 2025–26, representing a 5% year over year increase. The survey also found that around one third of CEO compensation was paid through stock awards. (Deloitte)

This blog explores the average CEO salary, how experience can influence compensation, what CEOs at leading companies may earn, and how startup CEO salary in India differs from traditional corporate compensation.

CEO Salary in India: An Overview

CEO compensation is different from a standard employee salary. A CEO’s package can include fixed salary, performance bonuses, stock options, commissions, retirement benefits, allowances, and other incentives.

This is why two CEOs with similar titles can have very different total compensation.

For example, Deloitte reported that professional CEO compensation had a median of ₹10.5 crore in FY 2025–26. In the previous year, the median was ₹10 crore, with 60% of total CEO compensation linked to performance. (Deloitte

At the same time, salary platforms that collect employee reported data can show much lower figures because they cover a much broader group of CEOs, including smaller businesses.

According to Glassdoor’s India salary data, the average base pay for a CEO is around ₹20 lakh per year, with additional pay averaging around ₹5 lakh. Its reported total pay range varies considerably. (Glassdoor)

The difference between these figures highlights an important point: there is no single CEO salary in India that applies to every company or CEO.

CEO Salary Based on Experience

Experience is an important factor when organizations decide executive compensation. However, there is no fixed salary scale where a CEO automatically earns a particular amount after a certain number of years.

A CEO with 15 years of experience at a growing company may have a very different compensation package from a CEO with 25 years of experience leading a large listed organization.

Experience generally becomes more valuable when it is combined with responsibilities such as:

  • Managing large teams
  • Leading business expansion
  • Managing financial performance
  • Building new markets
  • Handling investors and boards
  • Managing business transformation
  • Driving profitability and long-term growth

These are broad career stages rather than guaranteed salary bands. Actual compensation can vary considerably by company, industry, business size, and individual performance.

What Determines CEO Salary in India?

Why can one CEO earn ₹20 lakh while another receives several crores? Several factors influence executive compensation.

1. Company Size

The size of the company is one of the most important factors.

A CEO managing a small business may oversee a limited workforce and revenue base. A CEO at a large listed company may be responsible for thousands of employees, multiple business divisions, international operations, shareholders, regulators, and a board of directors.

Greater organizational scale can therefore lead to substantially different compensation.

2. Industry

CEO salaries also vary by industry.

Technology, financial services, pharmaceuticals, consumer businesses, manufacturing and consulting companies may have different compensation structures. Industries with strong equity based compensation may also provide larger stock incentives.

3. Business Performance

CEO compensation is primarily connected to performance.

Deloitte reported that in FY 2024–25, around 60% of professional CEO compensation was at risk and linked to performance. Short term incentives accounted for 25%, while long term incentives represented 35%. (Deloitte

This means the amount received by a CEO may change from one year to another.

4. Stock Awards and ESOPs

Stock based compensation can form a significant part of executive pay.

Deloitte’s 2026 survey found that approximately one third of CEO compensation was paid through stock awards. Larger companies, particularly Nifty50 companies, are increasingly using multi year performance share plans, while smaller companies continue to use stock options and ESOP structures.

5. Leadership Experience

A CEO with extensive experience in strategy, operations, finance, technology, or international business may command a different compensation package than someone taking on the role for the first time.

However, experience alone does not determine CEO salary. The scope of the role and the company’s compensation policies also matter.

CEO Salary in Top Companies in India

Large companies often disclose executive remuneration through annual reports. These disclosures are useful because they show how total compensation can include several components rather than only a monthly salary.

Infosys CEO Salary

Infosys is an example of how stock based compensation can significantly influence CEO pay.

According to Infosys’ FY2026 corporate governance report, CEO and Managing Director Salil Parekh received total remuneration of ₹82.60 crore in fiscal 2026. This included ₹8.50 crore in fixed salary, ₹23.35 crore in bonus and incentives, and ₹50.75 crore related to stock options exercised. (Infosys

Reuters also reported that Parekh’s total compensation increased 2.5% to ₹826 million in FY2026, with stock options forming the largest component. (Reuters)

This demonstrates why comparing only base salaries can provide an incomplete picture of executive compensation.

TCS CEO Salary

Tata Consultancy Services is another major Indian technology company where executive compensation includes multiple components.

According to the TCS FY2025–26 annual report, CEO and Managing Director K Krithivasan received ₹16.76 lakh as salary, ₹14.37 lakh as benefits, perquisites and allowances, and ₹25 crore as commission for the year. (Tata Consultancy Services)

The figures show how commission and other components can have a significant impact on the total CEO compensation package.

Wipro CEO Compensation

Wipro CEO and Managing Director Srinivas Pallia was appointed for a five year term beginning April 7, 2024. The company’s shareholder documentation states that his compensation structure included basic pay and target variable pay, each in the range of US$1.75 million to US$3 million per year, subject to applicable terms and performance. (Wipro)

Wipro’s FY2025–26 annual report continues to identify Srinivas Pallia as CEO and Managing Director.

These examples demonstrate that executive compensation can vary significantly even among major technology companies.

Startup CEO Salary in India

The startup CEO salary in India follows a different pattern from traditional corporate compensation.

A startup founder may technically be the CEO but may initially take a relatively modest salary because the company needs to preserve cash for product development, hiring, marketing and expansion.

As the startup grows, founder compensation can change significantly through salary increases, performance incentives, ESOPs or other forms of equity.

Salary.com reported an average annual salary of approximately ₹12.28 lakh for a startup founder in India, based on its April 2025 data. Its reported median was also approximately ₹12.28 lakh. (Salary)

However, founder compensation at funded and publicly listed new age companies can look very different.

According to Inc42’s FY25 Founder Salaries Tracker, 65 founders across 37 new age technology companies collectively earned ₹973.15 crore in remuneration, an average of ₹14.99 crore per founder. When only fixed pay was considered, the average was approximately ₹3.8 crore. The report noted that ESOP exercises and performance linked payouts contributed significantly to the overall figures. (Inc42 Media)

This makes startup CEO compensation particularly difficult to generalize.

How Is CEO Compensation Structured?

CEO salary is generally not just a monthly paycheck.

A compensation package may contain several components:

Fixed salary: This is the guaranteed portion of compensation paid according to the employment agreement.

Performance bonus: A CEO may receive an annual bonus based on financial and strategic targets.

Long term incentives: These can include stock awards, performance shares, and ESOPs.

Commission: Some companies provide commission to executive directors based on applicable policies and approvals.

Benefits and perquisites: These can include retirement benefits, allowances, and other employment-related benefits.

Deloitte’s 2026 findings show that companies are increasingly using different long-term incentive plans for different groups of executives instead of relying on a single compensation model.

CEO Salary vs Other C-Suite Roles

CEOs generally occupy the highest executive position in an organization, but other C-suite executives can also receive significant compensation.

Deloitte reported median compensation of ₹4.5 crore for CFOs in India in FY2025–26. It also noted that CFO compensation increased amid a greater focus on capital efficiency, financial resilience and shareholder accountability.

In the previous year’s survey, Deloitte reported that COO and CFO positions were the highest paid executive roles after the CEO, with compensation approaching ₹4 crore.

This illustrates how executive compensation reflects both responsibility and business priorities.

Skills That Can Help You Build a CEO Career

There is no single course or career path that guarantees a CEO position. However, aspiring CEOs typically need a combination of business knowledge, leadership ability, and industry experience.

Important skills include:

  • Strategic thinking
  • Financial management
  • Business development
  • Leadership and team management
  • Communication
  • Decision-making
  • Problem solving
  • Risk management
  • Digital and technology awareness
  • Stakeholder management

An aspiring CEO can build these capabilities through progressively senior roles, cross-functional experience, business projects, leadership responsibilities, and relevant management education.

Career Path to Becoming a CEO

A CEO career usually develops over several stages rather than happening overnight.

A professional may begin in a functional role such as finance, marketing, sales, operations, technology, or consulting. With experience, they may move into managerial and senior leadership positions.

A possible career progression could look like:

Entry level role → Manager → Senior Manager → Business Head → CXO → CEO

For entrepreneurs, the path can be different:

Idea → Founder → Startup leader → Growth stage CEO → Scaled company CEO

The timeline varies widely. Some founders become CEOs at an early stage, while corporate CEOs often reach the position after many years of leadership experience.

Future of CEO Salary in India

Executive compensation in India is increasingly moving toward performance-based models.

The Deloitte 2026 survey highlights greater use of multi year stock plans, performance shares and differentiated incentive structures. It also notes that companies are paying closer attention to internal performance measures rather than relying only on share price movements. (Deloitte)

For professionals planning a long-term leadership career, this means understanding business performance may be just as important as developing functional expertise.

As businesses become more technology-driven, CEOs are also expected to understand areas such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, data, cybersecurity, and changing customer expectations.

Conclusion

The CEO salary in India varies widely because the title covers leaders working across companies of very different sizes and stages.

For general CEO roles, salary platforms report compensation in the lakh range, while professional CEOs at large organizations can receive compensation worth several crores. Deloitte’s latest survey puts the median compensation for professional CEOs at ₹10.5 crore for FY2025–26, while company disclosures show how stock awards, bonuses, and commissions can significantly influence total pay.

The startup CEO salary in India can be even more difficult to estimate because founders may accept lower fixed salaries while holding substantial equity. As startups mature, compensation can change through salary, incentives, and equity-based rewards.

Ultimately, CEO compensation depends on company size, industry, experience, responsibilities, performance, and the structure of the employment package.
